Sheltering under a road overpass

Contrary to what you might think, according to FEMA and NOAA, it's actually more dangerous to try and take shelter from a tornado under a road overpass.  Tornado winds - and the dangerous debris they carry - are funneled around and through overpasses. This creates wind tunnels, which can make wind and debris speeds even stronger and more destructive.

An excellent article with more information is:  Tornado Safety and the Dangers of Highway Overpasses by the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness.
